Being a fool, letting down and losing a friend.

On the 6th January this year I got back it touch with an old friend through Facebook.
She has been through a some life changing events in the last couple of years, and I wanted to be my usual supportive self.
I let her know if she ever needed to talk, she could always contact me.
Unfortunately in my hurry to build our friendship back up again, I pushed her along ignoring her subtle signs, that I was trying to move too fast and this wasn't what she wanted.
On top of this I was constantly, apologising for being too intense, but doing nothing to back off.

Somewhat inevitably yesterday she blocked me on Facebook, cutting off my only means of communication with her.

I am devastated, not just because I have lost the chance of rebuilding our friendship but more so because I caused her unnecessary stress and hurt just when she doesn't need it.

I feel like I have failed her as a friend and that hurts more than the pain of her pushing me away.

If you ever get to see this Brigitte, I'm sorry. I wanted to be a supportive friend not cause you more sorrow and pain.

MORAL.
Always listen and don't twist an act of kindness round to fulfill your own needs!

The Paralympics and attitude towards the disabled.

The paralympics have, as always, shown us some fantastic triumphs over adversity. It is important to view these people as athletes not as disabled people and on the whole I think the coverage has portrayed them in this way.
There have been reports that the games have given the public an improved view of disabled people in general.
However, and pardon my skepticism, it remains to be seen whether this is true and whether this improved attitude will continue.
I am newly disabled myself, since my stroke in November 2010. Thankfully, I have not personally received any serious abuse but have had people barge past me, walk straight at me and mutter as they pass me in public places.
However there is a lot of well documented cases of disabled abuse, including some particularly disturbing ones in this report Hidden in plain sight.
I think it is time that disabled abuse gets the same protection in law as racist abuse.
